The Power of God
By Jim Corner
On January 23, 2004 I read an article from United Press International that gave me great relief. This is a quote from St. Petersburg, Russia: "Russian mathematicians have determined the legendary parting of the Red Sea that let the Jews flee Egypt was, possible, the Moscow Times reported." Wow, I was sure happy to read that. I now have scientific confirmation of what the Bible taught. Now excuse me while I pull my tongue from my cheek!
It is so fascinating to watch mankind try to figure out and understand God. In Isaiah 55:8 we read; "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." The Bible clearly teaches that God 'spoke' the world into existence. How did he do that? I have the answer: I DON'T HAVE A CLUE!
In the story of Job we see a man who was righteous. God allowed Satan to strike Job so that he lost his family, his wealth and his health. Into that picture came three of Job's friends. If you know the story well, you realize that I am using the word 'friend' loosely. His friends begin to tell him what a rotten guy he was and that his misfortune was based on his sin. Job does not accept the rebuke of his friends and states that he is righteous and undeserving of the trouble he is experiencing. Listen to these words directed to God by Job in chapter 23, verses 3-6; "If only I knew where to find him; if only I could go to His dwelling! I would state my case before Him and fill my mouth with arguments. I would find out what He would answer me, and consider what He would say. Would He oppose me with great power? No, He would not press charges against me."
Well, Job was able to talk with God but it was a discussion he came to regret. The Lord in chapters 38 & 39 rips Job. The Lord inquires as to where was Job when the Lord created the world? God wanted to know if Job could explain the creation that he was a part of. He finally confesses to the fact that he was way in over his head by trying to figure out God. I didn't need Russian mathematicians to let me know the reality of the crossing of the Red Sea by Israel. I knew it was true because the Word of God said so.
Is there a practical lesson to be learned from this? Yes, namely that this great God loves us and desires fellowship with us. When you examine some religions other than Christianity you see that the gods are to be feared. Our God, the one and true living God desires that we be in His family. He sacrificed His Son so that we could spend eternity with Him. Did the Jews cross over on dry land through the Red Sea? Yes! Did David kill a giant with a rock? Yes! Was Jonah swallowed by a large fish? Yes! We can say yes to everything written in the Bible.
The good news is that we can know the reality that this great God also sent His Son to die on a cross for us. Never forget that the God who is great beyond words loves you with a love that cannot be described.
